As a teenager in Poland, illustrator Justyna Stasik avoided doing her homework in favour of making collages and doodling. She continued this hobby throughout university (surprisingly, not art school) experimenting with a Wacom tablet. It was only when Justyna landed an internship at a game tech startup that she really honed her craft. “At that time I was designing mobile apps for kids and illustrating children’s books which definitely influenced my style, leaving this childlike and fun element in it,” she recalls. “In 2015 I moved to Canada, where I started freelancing and this is where I am at now.” Now, in her home of Montreal, Justyna spends her days creating work for the likes of Apple, The New York Times and Sony among others. She’s keen to one day try her hand at textiles, but for now she’s enjoying working on the commissions that just feel right. “I love projects revolving around lifestyle (broadly speaking) and fashion, a good commercial or even tech-y gigs with open-minded and creative art direction are always welcomed too,” says Justyna. “I like working on projects that are about emotions and intimate, internal life. Like the Lena Dunham piece about finding coziness in a struggle with chronic pain for New York Times or the article about the weirdness of experiencing jet lag for Outline Mag. Those are mostly personal projects (of course) but sometimes client work happens to fit into this realm and it always makes me very happy.”
Adobe, SuperHi, Intercom, Stripe, Apple, Sony, The New York Times, New Republic, Harvard Business Review, McDonald’s, The Recorder Magazine, Reddit, Pfizer.
It’s Nice That, Animalators, Women Who Draw, Ape on the Moon, Hey There, BLDGWLF, The Plus Paper.
