Hailing from Helsinki, ADC Young Gun award winner Lotta Nieminen lives and works in New York where she has been since an exchange to the Rhode Island School of Design during her time at Aalto University of the Arts. With her natural eye for graphic design, her work as an illustrator is exceptionally well put-together, drawing her attention from clients all over the world. Now Lotta is a designer, illustrator and art director, maintaining the same recognisable aesthetic in anything that she works on. “My work is colourful, generous, detailed and geometric with an affinity for a tactile feel,” says Lotta. “I find it easier to play with colours and patterns in illustration than in graphic design, where my taste is much more simple.” Working on editorial, packaging and advertising briefs, Lotta is keen to work on as many mediums as possible. “Those are the projects that force me to take my illustration style and process to a new level. I’ve had the chance to work on illustrations for a hand embroidered carpet, wine bottle labels, animated ads, cosmetics packaging, window installations and department store collateral,” she says. “These different mediums all require a different approach, which also help the style develop by posing new challenges.”
